Bluewater Occasional Teacher Local wins ETFO Member Service and Engagement Award

August 19, 2017

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has presented Bluewater Occasional Teacher Local with its 2017 Member Service and Engagement Award.

The award recognizes the excellence of ETFO locals in engaging members, providing outstanding service, and employing innovative strategies to communicate with and involve members in the Federation.

Led by President Andrew Chittka, Bluewater Occasional Teacher Local has made flexibility a key asset in serving its members. Because it does not have a local office and rigid hours, local leaders are available to connect with their members outside of normal teaching hours by telephone, email and in person. Recognizing that occasional teacher work can be precarious, the local provides funding for resources, professional learning and dependent care to ensure all members, no matter their personal situation, are not financially disadvantaged when attending one of the many professional learning opportunities that are offered.

The local’s Member Engagement Committee has offered numerous ways for members to feel engaged in their local including social events and a member website that promotes local and provincial initiatives including workshops, conferences and other events. The local recently introduced Occasional Teacher Awards and Schools of Recognition Awards. Two of the latter awards are handed out each year to schools that members have nominated as especially inviting places to work.

“Bluewater Occasional Teacher Local has given much thought to its purpose and recognized that its members have very different needs given that they may face precarious work and difficult schedules,” said ETFO President Sam Hammond. “That acknowledgement has guided the local to provide its members with the professional development, networking and personal support and advice they require to excel at their profession.”
